Adam Engler, Associate Professor, BIOENGINEERING (October 17, 2014)

“The licensing officer is always a great help, focuses the technology, and directs it to the appropriate companies. They’ve also directed companies who don’t know what they really want to me and we can work through what their needs are.”

Adam Engler, Associate Professor, BIOENGINEERING (October 17, 2014)

The licensing officer (LO) was terrific. It wasn’t an easy process but the LO was responsive and communicated all the issues well. The entire thing went smoothly and quickly, which I think is entirely about TTO and its professionalism.

Lynn Foster, Z Field Technologies (7/22/13)

Jeff Behrens, CEO, Sialix, Inc. (June 2013)

The Senior Licensing Officer is terrific to work with – very knowledgeable, professional, and helpful.

Jeff Behrens, CEO, Sialix, Inc. (June 2013)

Norman Smith, CEO, Vision RT Ltd. (April 2013)

UCSD is a key development partner for us, allowing us to promote work done at UCSD and give UCSD good exposure to their pioneering work. TTO is very pleasant to work with and very efficient. UCSD is better to deal with than most universities, possibly the best, based on this recent experience. Very responsive, fair and a pleasure to work with.

Norman Smith, CEO, Vision RT Ltd. (April 2013)

William Trogler, CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY (8/19/14)

The licensing officer did a great job. They were available to the potential licensee when problems arose on short notice even while traveling on personal family business.

William Trogler, CHEMISTRY & BIOCHEMISTRY (8/19/14)

Dong Wang, SCHOOL OF PHARMACY/PHARMACEUTICAL (9/22/14)

The TTO representative worked in a very effective way to help us proceed with the application of a provisional patent. TTO plays a major role in facilitating technology transfer and helping faculty to market their invention.

Dong Wang, SCHOOL OF PHARMACY/PHARMACEUTICAL (9/22/14)

Steve Roberts, MECHANICAL/AEROSPACE ENGINEERING (7/25/14)

Shawn Coyne, President, Amnion Laboratories, LLC (8/22/14)

The licensing officer I worked with was terrific — helpful, reasonable, win-win-oriented, and very patient with us. Our dealings with UCSD went fairly quickly and smoothly…UCSD is the best

Shawn Coyne, President, Amnion Laboratories, LLC (8/22/14)

Todd Coleman, Founder, NeuroVerse, Inc.; Associate Professor, Bioengineering (March 2012)

Good exclusive licensing terms for company, and good due diligence for checks and balances on UCSD’s behalf. I have worked very well with the licensing officer. Very fair, honest, and he connected us to a great attorney. All went well. Our lawyer has worked with UCSD in the past and he knew how to get things moving efficiently. Overall, the individuals I have worked with have been excellent in trying to accommodate the needs of everyone, subject to the constraints that they have.

Todd Coleman, Founder, NeuroVerse, Inc.; Associate Professor, Bioengineering (March 2012)

Geoffrey Dalbow, Image Owl (8/22/14)

I think the licensing officer is one of the best by combining professional and attentive care with great follow up. I have been licensing technology from Universities for 25 years and UCSD is the best. The licensing officer and the process were second to none! Thank you!

Geoffrey Dalbow, Image Owl (8/22/14)

The licensing officer was very helpful from start to finish and we were fully informed in all aspects. It was a very informative and enriching process and we are working hard to successfully develop this IP into our medical device products.

COO, Medical Device Company (October 2012)

Since this renewal happens once a year, I appreciate the licensing officer’s efficiency in sending reminders and making the process very smooth. Great – quick and easy.

CPA, Treasurer, Technology Company (April 2012)

Michael Homer, Clinical Fellow, REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE (5/19/14)

Everyone I touched base with was great.

Michael Homer, Clinical Fellow, REPRODUCTIVE MEDICINE (5/19/14)

The commercial terms were fair and both parties will benefit from the commercialization of the technology. My main interaction with the licensing officer has been outstanding. The TTO office has been very responsive to us and we are satisfied with the process. I have dealt with four Universities and UCSD is the best.

Executive Officer, Biotechnology Company (April 2012)

Jeffrey Goldberg, Professor, OPHTHALMOLOGY (5/19/14)

Good grasp, helpful in expanding ideas to maximize scope. The licensing officer who helped us was excellent–good fund of knowledge, and very rapid/timely responses.

Jeffrey Goldberg, Professor, OPHTHALMOLOGY (5/19/14)

The licensing officer is always very accommodating and knowledgeable. I have only interacted with one other university tech transfer office. UCSD was much better.

System Commercialization Coordinator, Technology Company (April 2012)

Shiv Shukla, Co-Founder, Vice President & Chief Designer, Theraflux Medical, Inc. (4/25/14)

As a first time inventor, I encountered a series of instances where I would have made a mistake but with the guidance from TTO, I felt more secure with the entire process. The licensing officer worked incredibly hard to help us with the patenting process because our financial situation as a new startup was a huge limiting factor in many decisions. I think UCSD is a great facilitator and partner to the technology industry. While the facilitation aspect is clear, by assuming risks, UCSD is also a partner in helping make technologies possible which might not have been without its help.

Shiv Shukla, Co-Founder, Vice President & Chief Designer, Theraflux Medical, Inc. (4/25/14)

Frank Talke, Professor, MECHANICAL/AEROSPACE ENGINEERING (11/24/14)

The discussions with the Technology Transfer Office licensing officer were interesting and fruitful.

Frank Talke, Professor, MECHANICAL/AEROSPACE ENGINEERING (11/24/14)

The SLO always does a great job of helping us access technology for a price we feel is fair and is also a pleasure to work with.

Business Development, Biotechnology (March 2012)

The process was smooth and most of the delay we experienced was on our side. Everything was handled quickly and professionally from the UCSD side.

Vice President, Technology Company (January 2012)

Brian Eliceiri, Professor, SURGERY (11/25/14)

Peter N. Rosen, M.D., OPHTHALMOLOGY (2/18/14)

Professor, Department of Medicine (January 2010)

Great people at your office–enjoyed the relationship thoroughly, thanks.

Professor, Department of Medicine (January 2010)

We secured access to the technology in a timely and cost effective manner, both of which are key since as a small startup we’re very resource constrained. I continued to be impressed by Senior Licensing Officer’s (SLO) professionalism, thoughtfulness and ability to negotiate a deal that enables the company to license what we need at a reasonable price. I’ve done a number of transactions with the SLO and (as I said before) am very impressed. The SLO is a thoughtful negotiator who has gone the extra mile to help us access the technologies we’re looking to license. What we end up paying always seems fair and the SLO’s understanding of how little companies operate is immensely valuable when structuring terms. I view the TTO as key facilitators who make it possible for inventors’ technologies to be industrialized/ commercialized.

Business & Development, Biopharmaceutical Development & Discovery (July 2011)

We were delighted to work with an outstanding professional SLO who facilitated a win-win agreement. We consider UCSD a valuable partner. We will not hesitate to consider UCSD for future projects where your technologies are applicable.

Business Development, Technology Company (July 2011)

Professor, Division of Biological Science (May 2012)

TTO turned around my 2 most recent disclosures on a very short timeline (especially that most recent one). My students wanted to present their work at a symposium, and TTO got prelims filed in time for them to do so. I appreciate that extra effort to fast-track them.

Professor, Division of Biological Science (May 2012)

Worked with TTO to create a structure that allowed UCSD research lab to be compensated for know-how (as opposed to patents). UCSD know-how was crucial to our development of technology for its clinical studies. Took longer than both sides had expected but that wasn’t the fault of the TTO. I think UCSD is better than most and they were very good to work with.

President, Pharmaceutical Company (October 2010)

Igor F. Tsigelny, Neuroscience (2/14/14)

The representative demonstrated a good understanding of our ideas and technologies and the science in them. He was helpful in explaining the relevant UC policies and intellectual property laws. He helped to expand our ideas to reach a large scope for the inventions and their utilities

Igor F. Tsigelny, Neuroscience (2/14/14)

The SLO I dealt with was highly collaborative and worked very hard to figure out a solution that achieved what my company needed that was within UC’s requirements. I always felt like the SLO was trying to do the right deal that worked for everyone and in the end, that’s what we have. The SLO was great and I would work with this SLO in a heartbeat. The key to our/TTO’s success is that the SLO LISTENS to what you need and UNDERSTANDS how to find a workable compromise. The SLO is pleasant to work with while remaining a firm negotiator. It was quite efficient (0-3 months), UCSD is better than most. This was my first experience with the UCSD TTO and it was excellent.

Business Development, Biotechnology Company (October 2010)

Over the years I have dealt with the TTO on several occasions as well as licensing offices at other academic institutions. I feel that the TTO is more responsive and interested in getting licenses completed than it has been in the past. The TTO plays a key role in transferring IP rights to industry. They need to do all of the above as well as keeping existing licensees informed of new opportunities. They are the gate keeper for licensing IP which is an extremely important source of potential revenue for the University. Very Good.

Business Development, Biotechnology Company (October 2010)

The SLO I [worked] with is very knowledgeable and responsive and made the process of completing this license run smoothly.

Business Development, Biotechnology Company (October 2010)

This was the first University that actually knew the value of customer service and treated me like a customer, rather than someone fortunate to do business with them. Honestly, when I see that I have to work with a University, I do not look forward to it at all. I have no reservations when I have to call UCSD Technology Transfer.

Business Technology, Large Pharmaceutical Company (January 2010)

[TTO] was a significant asset during [our start-up’s] licensing discussions with UCSD. Their depth of academic knowledge, business acumen and responsiveness aided us in closing a technically complex license for some technology from the department of BioEngineering in the Jacobs School of Engineering at UCSD.

CEO, Start-up Company (2007)

Comments after a university start-up acquisition: ..[this deal] perfectly represents how academic research, technology transfer and private industry can work together to bring innovative technologies to market

Local Venture Capitalist (June 2005)

Working with UCSD TTO in transferring technology developed at UCSD to one of our startups was indeed a pleasurable experience, and was a very, very quick process. TTO simply executes in a pro-startup fashion, and that is invaluable for the entrepreneurs.

CEO, Start-up Company (March 2009)

Can’t say enough about [Technology Transfer’s] role in recognizing and restoring the damaged relationship between our company and the University as a result of this successful negotiation.

Attorney, Biotechnology Company (May 2009)

The Senior Licensing Officer I worked with was excellent and facilitated the process when the project had been mired for more than 2 years at the other Regents Tech office.

CEO, Biotechnology Company (May 2009)

It was a real pleasure working with [TTO licensing staff] over the last few months. We are very thankful for [their] support during the process of putting the agreement in place. [Their] efforts, diligence and willingness to work with us through numerous iterations and challenging time lines are much valued and appreciated. We look forward to our continued collaboration and success of this endeavor for the benefit of UCSD and [our company]. Big thank you from all of us!

Business Development Executive, Biotechnology Start-up Company (December 2009)

The Senior Licensing Officer (SLO) contacted me after receiving a disclosure document. They seemed to understand very clearly the invention and its commercial application and gave me a clear explanation of the options for allocation of revenues from a license. They also asked about potential licensees. We discussed nondisclosure agreements. [note that this is a summary of a number of contacts and not a single event.] Overall I thought the SLO was very sharp and easy to deal with.

Professor, SIO (July 2011)

Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine (July 2011)

The SLO always showed a lot of interest in my work demonstrating great dedication to understand the very basic concepts of the research itself. Additionally, they were not just limited to work on the license point of view, but trying also to give suggestions even on the scientific work itself. In general, it has been a pleasure to work with such a motivated person. Thanks to the SLO most of the biggest biotechs in my field are having the chance to evaluate and potentially license what I created together with my Professor.

Postdoctoral Researcher, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine (July 2011)

Associate Professor, Radiology (May 2011)

The representative was great and had a good scientific understanding of the proposal and was very helpful explaining the UCSD policies and process. The licensing officer was also very helpful in summarizing the proposal into a document for submission. Overall a great resource at the University. I have dealt with other private law/patent offices in the past (very expensive and minimal service). The UCSD TTO is really a great resource and benefit for being a faculty at UCSD.

Associate Professor, Radiology (May 2011)

Professor, Biocircuits Institute (January 2010)

Professor, Department of Bioengineering (August 2009)

I had a good working relationship with the Senior Licensing Officer who was always very responsive and fair in all aspects of interactions with me. I also want to commend the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) for taking a risk on protecting the initial IP when there wasn’t a commercial partner or license in place. Carefully evaluated situations are sometimes worth such risks, as was proven in this case that resulted in UCSD recovering all patent costs and signing a license. This occurred to a significant degree because of the good relationship between the faculty member and licensing officer, who were able to carefully do appropriate due diligence and arrive at a calculated risk scenario that was worth pursuing.

Professor, Department of Bioengineering (August 2009)

Professor, Department of Pediatrics (July 2009)

Our licensing officer is very attentive and keeps us informed about each step.

Professor, Department of Pediatrics (July 2009)

Professor, Department of Radiology (June 2009)

Researcher, Department of Radiology (March 2009)

As an inventor who has some experiences of the patenting procedure at another institute, I was pretty impressed and surprised at the service from the technology transfer office. Our invention required a quick response from the office otherwise we could lose some of our [patent] rights. Every procedure for applying a patent at the office was much faster than I expected. I have never imagined such a fast procedure even in the urgent situation. Moreover I was impressed again of my licensing officer’s understanding on our field.

Researcher, Department of Radiology (March 2009)

Professor, Department Electrical and Computer Engineering (May 2009)

I understand the tremendous workload of [TTO] and the limited bandwidth to market any inventions. I would like to share my deep appreciation of the service provided by [TTO] to secure and protect our intellectual properties.
