The licensing officer I worked with is superb!
“The representative was helpful in explaining the relevant UC policies and intellectual property laws.”
“The licensing officer I worked with is great!”
“The licensing officer is always a great help, focuses the technology, and directs it to the appropriate companies. They’ve also directed companies who don’t know what they really want to me and we can work through what their needs are.”
The licensing officer (LO) was terrific. It wasn’t an easy process but the LO was responsive and communicated all the issues well. The entire thing went smoothly and quickly, which I think is entirely about TTO and its professionalism.
The Senior Licensing Officer is terrific to work with – very knowledgeable, professional, and helpful.
UCSD is a key development partner for us, allowing us to promote work done at UCSD and give UCSD good exposure to their pioneering work. TTO is very pleasant to work with and very efficient. UCSD is better to deal with than most universities, possibly the best, based on this recent experience. Very responsive, fair and a pleasure to work with.
The licensing officer did a great job. They were available to the potential licensee when problems arose on short notice even while traveling on personal family business.
The TTO representative worked in a very effective way to help us proceed with the application of a provisional patent. TTO plays a major role in facilitating technology transfer and helping faculty to market their invention.
I have been very pleased with my interactions with my licensing officer at TTO, who has been very helpful with good insights regarding moving my invention toward commercialization.
The licensing officer I worked with was terrific — helpful, reasonable, win-win-oriented, and very patient with us. Our dealings with UCSD went fairly quickly and smoothly…UCSD is the best
Good exclusive licensing terms for company, and good due diligence for checks and balances on UCSD’s behalf. I have worked very well with the licensing officer. Very fair, honest, and he connected us to a great attorney. All went well. Our lawyer has worked with UCSD in the past and he knew how to get things moving efficiently. Overall, the individuals I have worked with have been excellent in trying to accommodate the needs of everyone, subject to the constraints that they have.
I think the licensing officer is one of the best by combining professional and attentive care with great follow up. I have been licensing technology from Universities for 25 years and UCSD is the best. The licensing officer and the process were second to none! Thank you!
The licensing officer was very helpful from start to finish and we were fully informed in all aspects. It was a very informative and enriching process and we are working hard to successfully develop this IP into our medical device products.
Since this renewal happens once a year, I appreciate the licensing officer’s efficiency in sending reminders and making the process very smooth. Great – quick and easy.
Everyone I touched base with was great.
The commercial terms were fair and both parties will benefit from the commercialization of the technology. My main interaction with the licensing officer has been outstanding. The TTO office has been very responsive to us and we are satisfied with the process. I have dealt with four Universities and UCSD is the best.
Good grasp, helpful in expanding ideas to maximize scope. The licensing officer who helped us was excellent–good fund of knowledge, and very rapid/timely responses.
The licensing officer is always very accommodating and knowledgeable. I have only interacted with one other university tech transfer office. UCSD was much better.
As a first time inventor, I encountered a series of instances where I would have made a mistake but with the guidance from TTO, I felt more secure with the entire process. The licensing officer worked incredibly hard to help us with the patenting process because our financial situation as a new startup was a huge limiting factor in many decisions. I think UCSD is a great facilitator and partner to the technology industry. While the facilitation aspect is clear, by assuming risks, UCSD is also a partner in helping make technologies possible which might not have been without its help.
The discussions with the Technology Transfer Office licensing officer were interesting and fruitful.
The SLO always does a great job of helping us access technology for a price we feel is fair and is also a pleasure to work with.
The process was smooth and most of the delay we experienced was on our side. Everything was handled quickly and professionally from the UCSD side.
The representative was professional and helpful in explaining the relevant UC policies and intellectual property laws during the disclosure process.
The representative was very helpful, thorough, and provided much additional information to make the process easier to understand
Great people at your office–enjoyed the relationship thoroughly, thanks.
We secured access to the technology in a timely and cost effective manner, both of which are key since as a small startup we’re very resource constrained. I continued to be impressed by Senior Licensing Officer’s (SLO) professionalism, thoughtfulness and ability to negotiate a deal that enables the company to license what we need at a reasonable price. I’ve done a number of transactions with the SLO and (as I said before) am very impressed. The SLO is a thoughtful negotiator who has gone the extra mile to help us access the technologies we’re looking to license. What we end up paying always seems fair and the SLO’s understanding of how little companies operate is immensely valuable when structuring terms. I view the TTO as key facilitators who make it possible for inventors’ technologies to be industrialized/ commercialized.
We were delighted to work with an outstanding professional SLO who facilitated a win-win agreement. We consider UCSD a valuable partner. We will not hesitate to consider UCSD for future projects where your technologies are applicable.
TTO turned around my 2 most recent disclosures on a very short timeline (especially that most recent one). My students wanted to present their work at a symposium, and TTO got prelims filed in time for them to do so. I appreciate that extra effort to fast-track them.
Worked with TTO to create a structure that allowed UCSD research lab to be compensated for know-how (as opposed to patents). UCSD know-how was crucial to our development of technology for its clinical studies. Took longer than both sides had expected but that wasn’t the fault of the TTO. I think UCSD is better than most and they were very good to work with.
The representative demonstrated a good understanding of our ideas and technologies and the science in them. He was helpful in explaining the relevant UC policies and intellectual property laws. He helped to expand our ideas to reach a large scope for the inventions and their utilities
The SLO I dealt with was highly collaborative and worked very hard to figure out a solution that achieved what my company needed that was within UC’s requirements. I always felt like the SLO was trying to do the right deal that worked for everyone and in the end, that’s what we have. The SLO was great and I would work with this SLO in a heartbeat. The key to our/TTO’s success is that the SLO LISTENS to what you need and UNDERSTANDS how to find a workable compromise. The SLO is pleasant to work with while remaining a firm negotiator. It was quite efficient (0-3 months), UCSD is better than most. This was my first experience with the UCSD TTO and it was excellent.
Over the years I have dealt with the TTO on several occasions as well as licensing offices at other academic institutions. I feel that the TTO is more responsive and interested in getting licenses completed than it has been in the past. The TTO plays a key role in transferring IP rights to industry. They need to do all of the above as well as keeping existing licensees informed of new opportunities. They are the gate keeper for licensing IP which is an extremely important source of potential revenue for the University. Very Good.
The SLO I [worked] with is very knowledgeable and responsive and made the process of completing this license run smoothly.
This was the first University that actually knew the value of customer service and treated me like a customer, rather than someone fortunate to do business with them. Honestly, when I see that I have to work with a University, I do not look forward to it at all. I have no reservations when I have to call UCSD Technology Transfer.
Comments after a university start-up acquisition: ..[this deal] perfectly represents how academic research, technology transfer and private industry can work together to bring innovative technologies to market
Working with UCSD TTO in transferring technology developed at UCSD to one of our startups was indeed a pleasurable experience, and was a very, very quick process. TTO simply executes in a pro-startup fashion, and that is invaluable for the entrepreneurs.
Can’t say enough about [Technology Transfer’s] role in recognizing and restoring the damaged relationship between our company and the University as a result of this successful negotiation.
The Senior Licensing Officer I worked with was excellent and facilitated the process when the project had been mired for more than 2 years at the other Regents Tech office.
It was a real pleasure working with [TTO licensing staff] over the last few months. We are very thankful for [their] support during the process of putting the agreement in place. [Their] efforts, diligence and willingness to work with us through numerous iterations and challenging time lines are much valued and appreciated. We look forward to our continued collaboration and success of this endeavor for the benefit of UCSD and [our company]. Big thank you from all of us!
The representatives had a good grasp of the technology and helped coordinate meetings with potential investors.
I really appreciated the fast and professional response from the licensing officer, who explained clearly the issues for patenting our product.
The licensing officer (LO) has an excellent grasp of the idea and technology; very helpful in explaining UC laws and policies in general regarding IP. Prompt and timely interactions. We met in person. We went through lots of details and expanded ideas. Devised a very useful strategy for going forward. I am very impressed. The LO did and is still doing an outstanding job in my perception.
I was always kept well informed and I always enjoy working with everyone at TTO. I think TTO plays the major role as facilitator and marketer for UCSD faculty’s new inventions. But, it also plays an important role in educating many professors and students who are less familiar with the US patent process and UCSD technology licensing. The guys at TTO do a great job!
The licensing officer has done an excellent job of communicating and keeping me informed
I have dealt with TTO for several disclosures made over the years, some of which resulted in technology licenses from UCSD. The licensing officer has always been most helpful throughout the disclosure and licensing process and has provided me with all pertinent information regarding the process, answered questions, and even advised on technology transfer and University spin-off in general.
The representative is very knowledgeable about the UC policies and understands my idea very well. The representative is very approachable and always answers any question I may have. He is very helpful in crystallizing my ideas into patentable inventions and is working diligently to get my invention patented and eventually licensed to industries. I am having great experience with TTO.
The licensing officer knew exactly what was going on and was a pleasure to work with. Very helpful all along the way!
Very helpful. The TTO staff helped organize the process and added direction over where to go from here.
The licensing officer did a wonderful job and is a pleasure to work with, very professional.
Very helpful in learning the proper procedures. All my questions were all answered satisfactorily and promptly as they arose. IP is a very confusing but important interface between university protection, researcher protection, and outside industry interests. I thought the university provided very good service and did a very nice job at steering through this.
Your office was always open to discuss the process, which was important for me to learn.
The licensing officer was very helpful in providing details, deadlines and licensure options.
My experience with everyone was very positive.
I found the representative easy to work with, intelligent, realistic, and positive.
I have always worked with the same Senior Licensing Officer (SLO) who has always been most helpful in explaining all aspects of the technology transfer process and clarifying all of my doubts on the subject. The SLO has also advised on different strategies for potential commercialization.
During the whole process, from the initial disclosure of the invention, the discussion of patentability to the decision to abstain from pursuing protection, I was in regular discussions with the licensing officer who was knowledgeable and helpful. The decision to drop pursuing IP protection for this particular disclosure was made jointly and with my agreement.
The science around our invention may be a bit esoteric, but we came away with a good understanding of UC policies and intellectual property laws.
The representative I spoke with explained the process quite clearly. They also put in the effort to understand the mechanics behind and applications of the technology. I had a little contact with a TTO at another school I attended (completely unrelated to this project). By comparison, your office is much better organized and helpful.
Excellent. Insightful, helpful, and encouraging.
As always, the SLO I dealt with was very helpful. I have been very pleased with all my interactions with the Tech Transfer Office, and would rate the office outstanding.
The representative was knowledgeable and very easy to work with.
I was a little apprehensive before the meeting since I had some nonconventional ideas on how to commercialize my invention, but after talking with the senior licensing officer, I felt like that tech transfer office could be a partner in the process rather than just a bureaucratic hurdle.
Worked with the senior licensing officer for years and they always do a very good job. TTO has repeatedly helped facilitate the development of my inventions.
I have repeatedly interacted with the representative who is very knowledgeable and helpful. Since I was aware of their capabilities, I involved them early on in the process of developing a strategy how to best protect the IP developed in my lab.
The Senior Licensing Officer we worked with did a great job in the entire process. They acted very professionally and did thorough homework to best protect the interest of UCSD.
The Senior Licensing Officer (SLO) contacted me after receiving a disclosure document. They seemed to understand very clearly the invention and its commercial application and gave me a clear explanation of the options for allocation of revenues from a license. They also asked about potential licensees. We discussed nondisclosure agreements. [note that this is a summary of a number of contacts and not a single event.] Overall I thought the SLO was very sharp and easy to deal with.
The SLO always showed a lot of interest in my work demonstrating great dedication to understand the very basic concepts of the research itself. Additionally, they were not just limited to work on the license point of view, but trying also to give suggestions even on the scientific work itself. In general, it has been a pleasure to work with such a motivated person. Thanks to the SLO most of the biggest biotechs in my field are having the chance to evaluate and potentially license what I created together with my Professor.
The representative was great and had a good scientific understanding of the proposal and was very helpful explaining the UCSD policies and process. The licensing officer was also very helpful in summarizing the proposal into a document for submission. Overall a great resource at the University. I have dealt with other private law/patent offices in the past (very expensive and minimal service). The UCSD TTO is really a great resource and benefit for being a faculty at UCSD.
I had several discussions with several officials and they seem very good at the whole process.
I received enthusiastic response to my invention disclosure. The representative discussed the invention with me, made suggestions on how to make the patent more general in scope and was also very helpful in explaining the process and what the next steps are.
The SLO we dealt with was very helpful in explaining the process and walking me through it. I also got really good advice.
The representative was helpful and knowledgeable and provided important information about protection of our technology.
The SLO we dealt with was great, as usual.
I found the UCSD Technology Transfer Office to be very professional in their dealings.
The licensing officer I worked with was very efficient in handling this. There was no latency and our SLO stayed on the ball to make sure the technology transferred in the right way and to the right [company] for it to succeed.
The licensing officer I worked with was very good and understood the technology.
The representative was very helpful in explaining the relevant UC policies and intellectual property laws.
I had a good working relationship with the Senior Licensing Officer who was always very responsive and fair in all aspects of interactions with me. I also want to commend the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) for taking a risk on protecting the initial IP when there wasn’t a commercial partner or license in place. Carefully evaluated situations are sometimes worth such risks, as was proven in this case that resulted in UCSD recovering all patent costs and signing a license. This occurred to a significant degree because of the good relationship between the faculty member and licensing officer, who were able to carefully do appropriate due diligence and arrive at a calculated risk scenario that was worth pursuing.
Our licensing officer is very attentive and keeps us informed about each step.
Our licensing officer has been very proactive in the handling of our inventions, has diligently worked to understand the inventions and their relationships to our industry partners, and has been very helpful with timely and accurate communication through the patent process. Thanks!
Thank you very much for your advice on various aspects of the IP issues associated with my lab! We have been interacting on the issues of my patents/disclosures that was filed with UCSD and the service that I received from the Technology Transfer Office Licensing Officer was always superb. I was guided through the intricacy of licensing and potential commercial opportunities with deep understanding of technical details of the IP as it relates to our inventions. I am particularly impressed with their ability to explain complex legal issues using examples and simple language that even I can understand.
Thank you for your assistance with our recent patent filings. I have been very impressed with your attention to detail and your interest in making sure that the process runs quickly and smoothly. You kept us well informed throughout the process and did an amazing job of negotiating with the interested companies in a timely fashion. Based upon our interactions, I feel increased confidence in the ability of the UCSD Technology Transfer to handle our future IP issues.
As an inventor who has some experiences of the patenting procedure at another institute, I was pretty impressed and surprised at the service from the technology transfer office. Our invention required a quick response from the office otherwise we could lose some of our [patent] rights. Every procedure for applying a patent at the office was much faster than I expected. I have never imagined such a fast procedure even in the urgent situation. Moreover I was impressed again of my licensing officer’s understanding on our field.
I understand the tremendous workload of [TTO] and the limited bandwidth to market any inventions. I would like to share my deep appreciation of the service provided by [TTO] to secure and protect our intellectual properties.
After I met [my licensing officer] for the first time, I was very impressed at how she had carefully read my disclosures and patents and proposed a very sensible marketing plan.
I would like to thank my Licensing Officer in the Technology Transfer Office for her hard work and diligence that she has demonstrated on my most recent idea. [She] aggressively followed up on all the leads and immensely helped me understand the process of trying to get an idea to market. She worked doggedly to find suitable interested parties for this device idea. Her work is commendable.
My inventions have been recently handled by licensing officer, who has been providing an outstanding service. [She] came to my lab on several occasions to personally evaluate commercial potential of new technologies developed in the lab and to guide me through the processes of disclosing new inventions and marketing those disclosed before. [She] has also been helping me in establishing a collaboration with a local biotech company. I feel strongly encouraged to keep working with UCSD Technology Transfer Office.
I am very happy that you have taken over my patents at the office. I feel that you are taking lots of interests, actively pursuing these ideas and giving me lots of ideas about how to make them commercially successful. We have met several time during last 3 months and after each of these meetings I felt that you have taught me something new. I feel that you follow up on things in a very timely fashion and overall I feel very satisfied with our exchange so far.
I would like to express my appreciation of the quality of service and professionalism that I received from [my Licensing Officer]. We have been interacting on the issues of my patent that was filed with UCSD, and also on several other disclosures. I received impression that [she] is an exceptionally knowledgeable licensing officer who has very strong expertise and deep understanding of technical nuances of the intellectual property. Her style is enthusiastic and full of positive rapport.
Comments after TTO Staff Guest Lecture: I saw a few of the senior design students yesterday afternoon and they told me ‘good job with getting the guest lecture’. That is about the highest compliment you will hear from a student so I know they enjoyed your lecture. I did also and am glad we decided to include this topic in our course. Hopefully I can have you come back again next fall.
Thank you so very much for your support and service on the IAB for the last 4 years. Your participation has been invaluable and has been greatly appreciated by all.
